Buying children’s clothing can be expensive, but did you know there are several ways you can save money when it comes to purchasing clothes for your quickly growing children? In this post, I will talk about five of the best ways you can save money on buying children’s clothing.
Shop During Off Season to Save Money
Shopping during the off-season is one of the best ways you can save money on children’s clothing. What does this mean? It means you purchase winter clothes in the summer and summer clothes in the winter.
Steep discounts are usually offered when retailers are trying to clear out their inventory for the upcoming season. It’s not unheard of to save more than 50% on clothing during the off-season.
I have found that Old Navy offers great off-season deals. In fact, I purchased what felt like my daughter’s entire summer wardrobe when they had their big sale in the fall. She lived in these Old Navy rompers!
It was fun to have her wardrobe all stocked up ahead of time and look forward to having her wear the clothes as well.
I could plan certain outfits for certain events, and it made it even more enjoyable when she was wearing that outfit that I had picked out months before. This cute denim romper below was one of my favorites that I was saving months in advance! We even ended up using this picture for her 1st Birthday Party Invitations, so this piece holds a special place in my heart!
Buy Secondhand or Thrift to Save Money
I’ll be honest, I wasn’t a thrifter until I realized how fun it was. Once I started, I got hooked! There are different types of thrifting, but I have found that I really love consignment sales and consignment stores such as Once Upon a Child and Rhea Lana’s.
One of the best things you can buy secondhand is kid’s shoes, especially for babies and toddlers. They outgrow their shoes so quickly, so spending a lot of money on a pair of shoes that they aren’t going to wear very often just doesn’t make sense.
Some consignment stores also offer you money for clothing or items that you have purchased for your children from retail stores. You can also sell your child’s clothing on Facebook Marketplace and shop on Facebook Marketplace.
You can also check out online sites such as Kidizen or Mercari. I really love Kidizen, especially for holiday wear and shoes. In fact, I have purchased many outfits from Kidizen! Kidizen sellers are mamas themselves, and I’ve found that sometimes they ship the items faster than even big box stores.
Host Clothing Swaps
Now, I’ve never been a part of a clothing swap, but I have heard of them, and they sound pretty cool! A clothing swap is when a group of parents get together and bring clothes that their children no longer wear anymore. The clothes are traded out for ones that fit, and no one spends a dime! This is a great way to save money, and you can even add a few drinks in there to make it more fun.
Join Facebook Deals Groups
Facebook Deals groups can be a great way for you to find deals on clothing firsthand. You can search for these groups by typing “Deals Groups” in the search bar. Many times the owner of the group works with companies and shares special discount codes on top of deals that the company is already running. It’s an easy way to shop online without having to do the hard work!
Invest in Quality Pieces
This last one goes without saying, but sometimes it is worth it to spend more on certain items that you feel your child may wear often. This makes more sense for older children, but I also know that buying high-quality sleepers is important too. This is especially true if you have multiple children and plan on handing clothing down from child to child in the future.
To sum it up, buying children’s clothing doesn’t have to break the bank. By shopping during the off-season, purchasing secondhand, participating in clothing swaps, taking advantage of Facebook groups and other sales, and investing in high-quality pieces, you can save money while ensuring your child feels stylish and comfortable.
Let me know if you give any of these methods a try and tell me how it works for you!

Clothing swaps and hand me downs were such a blessing when my girls were young.

These are really great tips! I totally agree about the shoes, it doesn’t make sense to buy new as they grow so quickly. Clothing swaps are also a wonderful idea.
